Bed bugs and Christmas travel

December 19, 2011 Latest Updates by Brett Johnston

Twas the night before Christmas when all through the house, not a creature was stirring not even a mouse....

Well the mice might be sleeping but the bed bugs are out!

The holidays and Christmas are a time of giving, relaxing and celebrating family. Enjoy this time of year but be aware of bed bugs and make sure you don't bring home any surprise guests.

When staying in a hotel, place your bags in the bathtub or on the tiled floor in the bathroom and do an inspection of the room. Places to look (a flashlight is a great thing to tuck in your bag when you travel) -

  • Around and behind the headboard (many of the headboards can be removed fairly easily)
  • On the mattress and boxspring - especially near the head of the bed. Lift the sheets and look around the piping of the mattress and along the boxspring.
  • The bed skirt - look under it and separate the pleats.
  • The baseboard areas near the head of the bed.

You are looking for the bugs themselves but also their feces (black stains/spots), and cast skins.

When you get home, place items that may have been exposed to bed bugs into the dryer and use the heat cycle for at least 20 minutes.

We wish you a safe and wonderful Christmas!

Sleep tight......
